My name is Joseph and I am based in Abergavenny. I work as a self employed driving instructor and alongside that I spend a lot of my time working on photography and small creative projects.
I tend to be someone who likes starting things and seeing where they go. Sometimes that means building a website for a friend or a local organisation, sometimes it means beginning a photography project that develops over months or years. I enjoy the process of making things and seeing ideas slowly take shape.
Photography has been part of my life since around the age of 17. What interests me most is documentary work. I am not really interested in taking single pretty photographs that exist on their own. I prefer images that belong together and form a story. A photograph becomes more meaningful to me when it sits alongside others and starts to show something about a place, a group of people, or a moment in time.
One of the reasons photography became important to me is because I have a poor memory. Photographs help me hold on to moments that would otherwise disappear. When I look back through pictures I can remember places, conversations and small details that I would have completely forgotten. It also gives other people the chance to look back and reconnect with moments that meant something to them as well.
Alongside photography I also enjoy building websites. I first started doing this in school when we had a project where most people chose to make a PowerPoint style website. I decided to try building a real one instead using Wix, and I found that I enjoyed the process. Later at university I helped create a website for our graduation show, and since then I have continued building websites for my own projects as well as for friends, local businesses and charities. It is not something I actively chase as work but it is a skill I enjoy using when someone around me needs help bringing an idea online.

A lot of the photography projects I work on are connected to communities and local groups. I have spent time documenting places like the Deer Park Archery Club and I am also involved with a local Repair Café where volunteers meet once a month to repair household items for free. I help out there with some 3D printing and also photograph the events. Projects like these interest me because they show people doing practical things together and they reflect the character of the communities around them.
One of the photography projects I am most proud of is Downwind 29, which is something I plan to continue developing over time. I also hope to keep expanding my work documenting local groups and environments. There are still many places and communities that I would like to spend time photographing and understanding.
Outside of work and photography I spend time experimenting with 3D printing, gaming, and building or maintaining computers. I also enjoy driving and looking after my cars, which probably comes as no surprise considering my day job.
At the end of the day I simply like being involved in things. Whether it is a photography project, helping with a community event, or experimenting with a new idea, I like to stay active and keep building things. If someone comes across my work, I hope the main thing they notice is that I am always working on something and always trying to move ideas forward.e, curious, and constantly working on something meaningful.
